§ Mr. Pavittasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report the latest figures for the total costs of coronary heart disease to the community broken down into medical, social and economic categories.
§ Mrs. Currie[pursuant to her reply, 6 February 1987, c. 866]: Comprehensive information on the social and economic cost of coronary heart disease to the community is not collected centrally. The impact on employment, social security and social and voluntary services is so diverse that a reliable national estimate cannot be made. The only information that I can give the hon. Member is based on estimates, breaking down the latest cost available by diagnostic group, which suggest that in 1984–85 the cost of coronary heart disease to the National Health Service was about £250 million.
