HC Deb 10 February 1987 vol 110 cc211-2W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the increase in numbers of the ethnic minority population of the United Kingdom for the latest convenient year; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

Estimates are not made for individual years, but it is estimated that, during the period 1981–86, the average annual increase in the size of the ethnic minority (non-white) population was about 90,000 a year. An equivalent estimate for the United Kingdom is not available.

An article, giving further information about the estimation of the size and rate of increase of the ethnic minority population was published in December 1986 in "Population Trends" No. 46.

Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate for the latest convenient year the number of live births to mothers of New Commonwealth and Pakistan descent but who themselves were born in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

Estimates are not made for individual years, but it is estimated that, during the period 1983–85, an average of some 5,000 children were born in Great Britain each year to ethnic minority (non-white) mothers who were themselves born in the United Kingdom. An equivalent estimate for mothers of New Commonwealth and Pakistan descent, excluding those belonging to other ethnic minority groups, is not readily available.
