HC Deb 10 February 1987 vol 110 c172W
Mr. Ground

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much aid has been given by Her Majesty's Government bilaterally to Nicaragua in each of the last five years; and how much aid has been given by the European Community to Nicaragua in each of the last five years.

Mrs. Chalker

British bilateral aid to Nicaragua over the five years 1981 to 1985 was:

£'000
1981 91
1982 49
1983 64
1984 9
1985 116

This aid was used for two purposes: disaster relief, channelled through the Nicaraguan Red Cross, Oxfam and the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development; and the training of a few Nicaraguans in Britain. In addition, we helped British voluntary agencies to fund some projects in Nicaragua.

European Community aid to Nicaragua between 1981 and 1985 was:

£'000
1981 501
1982 415
1983 452
1984 1,099
1985 976

Figures for 1986 are not yet available.
