HC Deb 10 February 1987 vol 110 c197W
40. Dr. Twinn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what preparations his Department has made for treating casualties resulting from the intentional or accidental use of chemical weapons in the United Kingdom.

Mrs. Currie

In the absence of a ban on chemical weapons, the Government are considering the questions of detection and warning of chemical attacks and protective measures against them.

Health authorities are being advised that the threat from chemical weapons will be the subject of guidance when current studies by the Government are complete.

The National Health Service has the capability to treat casualties from a variety of chemical hazards in peacetime. Specialised advice on effects and treatment can be sought from the National Poisons Information Service.
