§ Mr. Dubsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many vehicles were towed away by the police in London (a) in 1986 and (b) so far in 1987; in how many instances its driver was not required to pay the removal charge; and why.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggThe Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has informed me that 43,942 vehicles were removed by his force in 1986, and that up to 31 January this year 2,959 vehicles were removed. The removal charge was waived or not paid in 5,326 cases in 1986, but the8W figure for 1987 is not available. The charge is waived where it appears, in the light of further information that no offence has been committed, or where evidence of extenuating circumstances is accepted. Charges go unpaid where the vehicle is not claimed from the pound or action to recover the charge is unsuccessful.
