What precautions are taken where a prisoner is identified as being HIV positive.
The Minister of State, Home Office (The Earl of Caithness)Regimes for individual prisoners are determined by local management in the light of the circumstances of the individual case. The general policy is to allow a prisoner who is well to participate as fully as possible in the normal regime of the establishment subject to certain restrictions which are necessary for the health and safety of staff and fellow prisoners. The recommended restrictions include placement in a single cell or a communal cell with other antibody positive prisoners and exclusion from work with machinery, sharp needles, knives and similar objects, PE and physical contact sports. Infected prisoners are also counselled on the modes of communication of the infection and are enjoined to take precaution to prevent communication to others.
