the total number of police officers at the end of November 1986 was 121,132, so police accommodation was available for nearly 14 per cent. of officers. Information is not held centrally about the types, or the average monthly cost, of the accommodation provided.
Information is not held centrally about the amount, types and average monthly cost of accommodation provided to firefighters by fire authorities.
Information about the number of nurses provided with accommodation is not collected centrally. However, a study in 1983 suggested that 64,000 or about 14 per cent. of all nurses in England then lived in health authority accommodation. Lodging charges which are set nationally 111W each year reflect the full economic cost of accommodation and services provided. Student and pupil nurses occupying the simplest type of accommodation receive an automatic abatement of 40 per cent.
