HC Deb 09 February 1987 vol 110 cc49-52W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Paymaster General if he will give a detailed breakdown by ward of the latest unemployment figures for (a) Kensington and (b) Leyton; and what percentage the figures in each ward and the totals represent of the total population in each constituency.

Mr. Lee

The following information is in the Library. The only source of information on the population in Parliamentary constituencies is the decennial census of population. The 1981 census identified populations of 68,097 and 78,430 respectively, present on census night in the Kensington and Leyton constituencies. Estimates of the current population are not available. The table shows the numbers of unemployed claimants on 11 December 1986 in each of the electoral wards in the Kensington and Leyton constituencies, together with the percentages and figures present of the total population resident in 1981 in each constituency.

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Paymaster General what information he has concerning the numbers and percentages of the work force in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available who have been employed in (a) manufacturing industry and (b) service industries in (i) the north-west region and (ii) the south-east region.

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Paymaster General how many people have been employed in total in the north-west region in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available; what percentage of the total work force in that region this figure represents; and how it compares with the figures in the south-east region in each of those years.

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Paymaster General what information he has concerning the numbers of people unemployed in (a) the north-west region and (b) the south-east region in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available; and what percentage of the total work force in each of those regions these figures represent in each of those years.

Mr. Lee

The following information is in the Library. The table gives annual averages of the numbers of unemployed claimants excluding school leavers, adjusted for discontinuities, together with the corresponding unemployment rates calculated as a percentage of the working population for the south-east and north-west regions for each year since 1976.

Mr. Lee

The tables give, for north-west region and south-east region, the civilian employed labour force (which is the sum of employees in employment 'and the self-employed), and the numbers of employees in employment in the industries specified at June each year from 1976 to 1986. These figures are also expressed as a percentage of the civilian working population (which is the sum of the civilian employed labour force and the unemployed) in each region. Estimates of the total numbers employed, broken down by industry within region, are not available as the self-employed statistics are not analysed in this way.
