Improvement and Repair Grants

13. Mr. Grist

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give the number and value of improvement and repair grants in (a) Wales and (b) Cardiff since 1979–80.

However, estimated figures for 1985¹ show the number of physically and mentally handicapped children under the age of 16, known to or in contact with the boards, as follows:

Between April 1979 and September 1986, 45,059 improvement grants and 60,020 repair grants were paid in Wales, with a total value of some £153.5 million and £151.9 million respectively.

In Cardiff, there were 2,783 improvement grants and 7,234 repair grants, whose total values were £9 million and £19.9 million respectively.
