HC Deb 05 February 1987 vol 109 cc787-8W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners were allowed (a) terminal home leave and (b) short home leave in 1985; and how many of these failed to return to prison.

Mr. Mellor: (a) 1,046; (b) 971. The figures collected centrally do not distinguish between failures to return from terminal home leave, short home leave and pre-parole leave. The total numbers of home leaves in all three categories granted in 1985 was 4,440. 243 prisoners failed to return. These figures exclude young offenders.
