§ 21. Mr. Alexanderasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any proposals to improve both the working and the living conditions of prison officers working in Her Majesty's prisons; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MellorPrison officers stand to benefit from many aspects of the Government's policies for, and record levels of expenditure on the prison service. Particular examples are the prison building programme, which includes planned expenditure of some £20 million on staff facilities as well as other improvements in officers' working conditions; and the "Fresh Start" initiative which will substantially reduce officers' average working week while enhancing their basic pay and general working arrangements.
