§ 52. Mr. Beithasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has any plans to introduce legislation to change the system by which local authorities are elected; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggWe have no plans to change the simple majority system of voting at local authority elections in Great Britain. We are still considering a recommendation by the Widdicombe committee of inquiry 783W into the conduct of local authority business that all councillors in England and Wales should be elected every four years by whole-council elections based on single-member electoral areas.
