§ 72. Mr. Ashtonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what financial and other support is offered to cities bidding to host world and European championships in or on sport.
§ Mr. TraceyWe would wish to offer every diplomatic, promotional and administrative assistance for United Kingdom cities bidding to host international sporting events. Careful planning, skilled marketing and close liaison with potential sponsors by the city authorities and governing bodies of sport should obviate the need for public expenditure on such events.
The Sports Council may also assist local authorities in efforts to attract international events.
