Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what information he has as to what proportion of the gross output of the pharmaceutical industry comes from Scotland;

(2) how many people are employed in the pharmaceutical industry in Scotland.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The proportion of gross output in the pharmaceutical products industry1 accounted for by manufacturing units in Scotland in 1985 was 7.1 per cent. of the total for the United Kingdom as a whole. The employment of these units totalled 5,500.
