Mr. Raynsfordasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will inform the House of the number of households accepted as homeless, the number of council houses completed, the number of housing association houses coming into letting, whether as a result of new build or rehabilitation, and the estimate of the total number of private sector lettings in England and Wales, respectively, in 1979 and 1986.
§ Mr. TraceyThe numbers of new dwelling completions for local authorities and for housing associations in 1979 and in the first three quarters of 1986 appear in table 6.1 of "Housing and Construction Statistics 1975–1985" and in table 1.2 of "Housing and Construction Statistics No. 27", which are available in the Library. Figures of dwellings renovated by housing associations in England are in tables 7.1 and 2.13, respectively, of the same publications.
In England, the estimated stock of dwellings rented from private owners at December 1979 was around 2,040,000. At September 1986 there were about 1,540,000 private rented dwellings.
English local authorities accepted 57,200 households as homeless in 1979. The figures for the first three quarters of 1986 appear in table 1(a) of press notice No. 13 issued by this Department on 16 January 1987, which is available in the Library.
