HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 c526W
Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the cost to the taxpayer of the traffic census currently being undertaken throughout the country.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Expenditure on traffic monitoring, including roadside interviews by this Department in the financial year 1986–87 is expected to be some £5 million. Of this, about a quarter (£1.35 million) is spent on national traffic monitoring. The remainder (£3.62 million) relates to schemes undertaken for regional offices and includes, for the first time, traffic monitoring in London.
