§ Mr. Gordon Brownasked the Paymaster General if he will provide his most recent estimates for employment in electronics, class 34, by regional area, Scotland and Wales; and if he will indicate for each area the net loss, or gain, of jobs between June 1979 and June 1986.
§ Mr. LeeEstimates of the numbers of employees in employment in the electrical and electronics engineering industry in the regions, Scotland and Wales are available only from censuses of employment. For other dates, the survey sample is not large enough to provide reliable estimates other than for Great Britain.
The following table gives, for the areas specified, the numbers of employees in employment in the industry at September 1984, the most recent date for which a census of employment was held. It also gives the net changes between September 1981 (the date of the previous census of employment, and the earliest date for which comparable figures are available) and September 1984. The estimates are subject to considerable potential estimation error due to the relatively small number of employees in the industry in each region, Scotland and Wales.
