HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 cc535-6W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on his discussions with Dalgety Foods Limited on the proposal to close its potato crisp factory at Broxburn, West Lothian, on 31 July.

Mr. Lang

Following the announcement of the intention to close the factory at Broxburn, my officals immediately contacted the senior management of Golden Wonder Limited. I understand that it is the company's view that, in order to ensure the long-term survival of its crisp manufacturing business, it had to increase the efficiency of its production. After consideration of a number of options, it concluded that this would best be achieved by closure of the factories at Broxburn and Long Buckby in Northamptonshire.

The decision is a matter for the commercial judgment of the company. However, I share the concern that has been expressed about the impact of this closure on the Broxburn community and my officials would be ready to consider assistance for any viable use for the facility.
