HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 c490W
Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his policy towards the building of council housing upon public allotments; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

Local authorities wishing to use statutory allotments for other purposes such as housing may not do so without the consent of the Secretary of State under section 8 of the Allotments Act 1925. Consent may be given only if adequate alternative provision is made for displaced plotholders, or if such provision is considered unnecessary or not reasonably practicable. Consent is not required for the disposal of non-statutory allotments.
