§ Mr. Conwayasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he intends to issue a circular to local education authorities on the timing of A-levels and GCSE examinations with regard to school leaving dates and term conclusions; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. RumboldMy right hon. Friend has no plans to issue guidance to local authorities on these matters. It is for the relevant examination boards to consider the timing of these examinations in consultation with local authorities and other interested parties. The replacement of O-levels and CSE by the GCSE will shorten and simplify the 16-plus examinations timetable. I am not aware of intended further changes which have implications for school leaving or term dates.
