Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was Government spending on the National Health Service per household for 1979, and for 1986–87, at(a) current prices, (b) 1979 prices and (c) 1987 prices, showing the number of households taken as the base for each.

The figures requested are as follows:

The number of households is estimated at 19.6 million for mid-1978 and 20.8 million for mid-1986. Household data are estimated by the Department of the Environment using past census trends and population data supplied by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys.
