§ Mr. WigleyTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what account he takes of a person's attitude towards the privatisation of the Health Service when considering appointments to the membership of health authorities in Wales; and whether knowledge of a person's attitude to this matter, or their general political attitude, is sought by his Department before it makes such appointments.
§ Mr. Grist[holding answer 17 December 1987]: Most members of health authorities are appointed directly by 814W county and district councils or by my right hon. Friend after formal consultation with professional and other organisations connected with the Health Service. Our aim in filling the remaining generalist places is to achieve a balanced membership which will act corporately and responsibly to ensure that an authority's actions will be in the best interests of the people of the district it exists to serve.
