To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give, for the last year for which figures are available, the total for England and Wales and a breakdown for each family practitioner committee, of(a) the number of general practice premises and (b) the amount directly reimbursed to unrestricted principals in general practice for the cost of providing premises under the rent and rates scheme.

Mr. Newton

The information requested on the number of general practice premises in England and Wales is not available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The total amount directly reimbursed to unrestricted principals in England and Wales during 1986–87 under the rent and rates scheme was £74 million. The breakdown for each family practitioner committee is scheduled in the table.
