To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what action he is taking to protect employment in rural communities.

As envisaged in the farming and rural enterprise package announced on 10 March, the Government are pursuing a number of new initiatives which will assist rural employment. So far as my own Department is concerned, I am introducing the farm diversification grant scheme and the farm woodland scheme, both of which will encourage on-farm business activity.
