HC Deb 17 December 1987 vol 124 cc683-4W
Sir Eldon Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the approximate average cost to the National Health Service of the following operations (i) heart transplant, (ii) kidney transplant, (iii) liver transplant, (iv) heart by-pass, (v) heart valve replacement, (vi) hysterectomy, (vii) hip replacement, (viii) knee replacement, (ix) in vitro fertilisation and (x) abortion.

Mrs. Currie

We do not routinely make estimates of the costs of individual operations. Such information as is available for seven of the operations listed is based on special studies. This has, where necessary, been revalued to take account of inflation. Details of treatments and length of stay in hospital may have changed since the studies were done. The figures are therefore only approximate.

£
Heart transplant 115,000
Kidney transplant 27,400
Coronary artery bypass graft 3,300
Heart valve replacement 5,000
Hysterectomy 31,200
Total hip replacement 3,300
Abortion 170
1 Including additional costs in the year of operation.
2 Based on 1981 study.
3 Based on 1982 study.
