To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he plans to impose charges on any further National Health Services services.

Mr. Winnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he has any plans for legislation to require National Health Service patients in hospitals or visiting a general practitioner to pay for any services; and if he will make a statement.

We have no such plans.

Mr. Clay

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what the percentage rise in(a) prescription charges, (b) minimum dental charges and (c) maximum dental charges has been between 1979 and the latest date available in (i) cash terms and (ii) real terms.

Mr. Newton

Between 1979 and 1987 prescription charges rose by 433 per cent. in cash terms and by 207 per cent. in real terms. The maximum charge for a single course of dental treatment rose by 219 per cent. in cash terms and 84 per cent. in real terms. There is no minimum charge.
