HC Deb 17 December 1987 vol 124 c742W
Mr. Boswell

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what current regulations apply to noise emission by heavy lorries; what changes are planned; and whether he will make a statement on current compliance and available technology to meet these requirements.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The noise limit for the heaviest lorries first used since 1 October 1983 is 88dB(A). A new limit for these vehicles of 84dB(A) will apply to all lorries type approved on or after 1 October 1989, and to all lorries first used on or after 1 April 1991. To aid the development of lorries capable of meeting the new limit, the Government and industry have collaborated on a programme of research and development (QHV90) which is due to be completed next year.
