To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many general practitioners referrals of patients to the hospital eye service there were in each of the years from 1980.

Information for the number of patients who were prescribed a pair of glasses by the hospital eye service in Wales is given in the following table. It is not possible to say how many of these patients were referred by their general practitioners.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure by his Department on press and public relations for(a) 1987–88 and (b) 1988–89.

The total estimated expenditure on press and public relations in 1987–88 is £1,047,500. This figure includes expenditure on salaries and accommodation for all the information grades and support staff.

The total estimated expenditure on press and public relations in 1988–89 is £1,198,000. The figure includes expenditure on salaries and accommodation for all the information grades and support staff.
