HC Deb 14 December 1987 vol 124 cc372-3W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer pursuant to his reply of 9 December, how many of the jobs created between 1983(a) in manufacturing industry and (b) in the services sector were in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Major

Estimates of self-employment by industry are not available for Scotland. The table sets out the figures for employees in employment in manufacturing and in services, along with estimates of total employees in employment, total self-employment in Scotland, and total employment.

Employment in Scotland (thousands, mid-year) (changes on a year earlier in brackets)
Employees in Employment
Manufacturing Services Total (Manufacturing Services and other) Self-employment Total Total Employment
1983 444 1,216 1,899 179 2,078
1984 434 1,231 1,901 185 2,086
(-10) (+15) (+2) (+6) (+8)
1985 430 1,244 1,904 200 2,104
(-4) (+3) (+3) (+15) (+18)
1986 410 1,260 1,888 205 2,093
(-20) (+16) (-16) (+5) (-11)
Change between 1983–1986 -34 +44 -11 +26 (+15)

Some of the decrease in the figure for manufacturing will be the result of the reclassification of jobs such as industrial cleaning, catering, computer services and road haulage previously done by manufacturers' own employees and now done by subcontractors. This developing feature of our economy has the effect of exaggerating the extent of the move from manufacturing to service sector employment. Service sector and total employment in Scotland have increased since 1983.
