§ Mr. JoplingTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will estimate the largest quantity of wheat which could be delivered to a value of £1,000, to a given port in Ethiopia, if the wheat was(a) bought in the market in an EEC member state, (b) bought from EEC intervention stores or (c) bought at the cheapest price on the world market.
§ Mr. EggarOn the basis of the most recent tender for United Kingdom food aid to Ethiopia, £1,000 would cover the total costs of the delivery to a port in Ethiopia of 7.3 tonnes of wheat whether purchased on the Community market or from EC intervention stocks. However, since much of the cost is borne on the EC agriculture budget, expenditure of £1,000 from the United Kingdom aid budget allows the delivery of 16 tonnes of wheat.
380WWe have been informed by the World Food Programme that, on the basis of its cheapest recent tender on the world market, £1,000 would cover the cost of the delivery of 17.5 tonnes of wheat to its (different) specification to a port in Ethiopia.
