HC Deb 14 December 1987 vol 124 c370W
93. Dr. Michael Clark

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will indicate for the last five years, the number of civil servants(a) recruited, (b) leaving the service and (c) transferred between Departments.

Mr. Brooke

For the five years 1982 to 1986 there were 198,000 entrants to the non-industrial Civil Service, mainly as recruits to junior grades. During the same period there were 229,000 leavers from the non-industrial Civil Service, from all causes.

Statistics covering entrants to and leavers from the industrial Civil Service are not available, but the overall numbers of industrial civil servants in post have declined from 132,000 as at 1 January 1983 to 93,000 as at 1 January 1987.

Statistics covering transfers of staff between Departments are not collected centrally.
