§ Mr. John GarrettTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, further to his reply to the hon. Member for Norwich, South of 1 December, which sewage works in the Anglian water authority failed their discharge consent conditions in 1986; and on how many occasions.
§ Mr. MoynihanThe report submitted earlier in the year by Anglian water authority showed that around 300 of the authority's sewage treatment works were deemed to have failed to meet their discharge contents because more than 5 per cent. of samples taken exceeded the consent conditions. In well over half of these cases, however, the consent conditions were in the process of being reviewed as part of a general review of consents started in 1985 for works whose discharges were considered to have no appreciable effect on the receiving waters. Full details of discharges from all non-compliant works are in the public register maintained by the water authority, but I will write to the hon. Member listing the works in question.
The water authority is working towards bringing all its sewage treatment works into compliance by 1990.
