To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average level of qualifications of medical laboratory scientific officers working in the public health laboratory service.

This information is not recorded. Registration in the basic medical laboratory scientific officer grade is on the basis of a Higher National Certificate or equivalent qualification plus prescribed in-service training. Further qualifications and experience may well be required for appointment to more senior medical laboratory scientific officer posts.
