HC Deb 09 December 1987 vol 124 cc205-6W
Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what contingency plans his Department has in the case of an AIDS epidemic among heterosexuals in the United Kingdom within the next five years.

Mr. Newton

The low rates of HIV infection currently found amongst heterosexuals in the United Kingdom suggest that it is very unlikely that there will be epidemic spread of heterosexually acquired HIV in the next five years. The public education programme on AIDS prevention is designed to ensure this situation is maintained. All health authorities in England have prepared plans for dealing with HIV infection and AIDS, and the costs of providing AIDS-related services are kept under close review in the light of the latest information available about the spread of HIV infection.
