HC Deb 08 December 1987 vol 124 c153W
Mr. Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence where the three weather radars planned for installation in Scotland will be sited.

Mr. Sainsbury

No sites for these three weather radars have yet been selected. Proposals are likely to focus on the Hebrides, the highlands north-west of Aberdeen, and somewhere in the vicinity of Edinburgh or Glasgow, taking advantage of high ground to obtain the best results.

Mr. Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what capability the three weather radars planned for installation in Scotland will have to detect electronic emissions.

Mr. Sainsbury

None.

Mr. Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what capability the three weather radars planned for installation in Scotland will have to detect aircraft.

Mr. Sainsbury

None.

Although aircraft illuminated by the sweep of the rotating beam of the radar will produce echoes, the system was selected for optimum sensitivity to precipitation and has no capability to detect or recognise aircraft.
