§ Dr. MarekTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what were the numbers of persons paying pay-as-you-earn, for the last 10 years for which information is available.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 12 November 1987]: The table gives estimates of the numbers of individuals who were liable to tax on their total income and had income subject to PAYE which was greater than the PAYE threshold. Married women are included if their earned income exceeded the maximum amount of wife's earned income relief. I regret that information for earlier years could be compiled only at disproportionate expense.
