HC Deb 04 December 1987 vol 123 c778W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what research his Department is carrying out into the harmful effects of marine pollution on seals; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

[holding answer 24 November 1987]: The primary responsibility to keep under review the status of United Kingdom seal populations rests with my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland under the terms of the Conservation of Seals Act 1970. Advice on these matters is taken from the sea mammal research unit of the Natural Environment Research Council and I understand that latest surveys indicate that the numbers of seals in United Kingdom waters are being maintained at healthy levels.
