Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what conditions have been imposed on the Government money which has been given to private hospitals in Leicester; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how much public money his Department has given to the Leicester clinic, a private hospital in Leicester, since 1979;

(3) how much Government money has been given to private hospitals in the Leicester city area in 1986 and 1987, to date.

[holding answer 3 December 1987]: It is for district health authorities to decide on the extent to which they make use of their allocated budgets to enter into contractual arrangements with private health sector institutions for the treatment of NHS patients. Detailed information requested is not available centrally.
