HC Deb 04 December 1987 vol 123 cc739-40W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Leader of the House what has been the cost of running the Norman Shaw North branch library in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Wakeham

Staffing for the branch library is provided on a rota basis by the public information office of the Library's parliamentary division. The cost of staffing can therefore only be stated approximately. The figures, which do not include national insurance contributions or other employers' overheads, are as follows:

Year Estimated Cost £
1987 47,000
1986 45,000
1985 35,000
1984 33,000
1983 32,000

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Leader of the House how many inquiries have been dealt with by the Norman Shaw North branch library from individuals, other than Members, in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Wakeham

The number of inquiries from Members' personal staff dealt with in the branch library over the last five years is as follows:

Year Telephoned inquiries Inquiries lodged in person Total
19871 7,391 5,110 12,501
1986 9,152 6,642 15,794
1985 8,650 6,716 15,366
1984 8,840 8,464 17,304
1983 6,019 6,680 12,699
1 To 30 November.

1983 and 1987 were General Election years, during which no Members' personal staff were allowed to use the branch library for a one-month period. The figures in the table exclude the inquiries from the general public which are handled by the public information office.
