HC Deb 04 December 1987 vol 123 c735W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the purpose of the current level of military commitment in Hong Kong; and if he will reduce it.

Mr. Ian Stewart

British forces are stationed in Hong Kong to assist in maintaining stability through support as appropriate to the needs of defence and internal security of the territory. It is our intention to maintain the garrison at a strength sufficient to discharge this responsibility, up to the date of transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China on 1 July 1997.

Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will consider reducing the proportion of the expenditure on British forces in Hong Kong met from Hong Kong sources; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The current defence costs agreement between the British and Hong Kong Governments, which covers the apportionment of the costs of British forces in Hong Kong between the two Governments, is due to expire on 31 March 1988. Negotiations are under way between representatives of the two Governments about arrangements to apply after that date.
