Mrs. MichieTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many cases of alkali silica reaction in concrete have been reported in the years 1985, 1986 and 1987.
§ Mr. TrippierThere is no formal system of reporting cases of alkali silica reaction to my Department. However, I understand that the Building Research Establishment has had 20 cases brought to its attention.
Mrs. MichieTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has on progress in establishing a design of concrete mixes which would not be susceptible to alkali silica reaction; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. TrippierWork is in progress at the Building Research Establishment on methods of test and classification of aggregates. The test methods are now being submitted to the British Standards Institution as a draft standard. BRE is also revising its present recommendations on mixes in BRE Digest 258 and is contributing to a committee of the Concrete Society which is considering the subject.
