Over 5,000 protected shorthold tenancies were created in England and Wales between 28 November 1980, the date on which shorthold was introduced, and 1 December 1981. Information about shortholds created since 1 December 1981 has not been collected because the compulsory rent registration requirement for new shortholds outside the Greater London area was lifted on that date under the Protected Shorthold Tenancies (Rent Registration) Order 1981.
