Shipbuilding Industry (Redundancies)

Ms. Quin

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will give the total number of redundancies in the shipbuilding industry in Tyne and Wear during the period from 1 January to 31 December 1986.

Mr. Atkins

It is estimated that there was a reduction in employment of some 16,000 in the shipbuilding industry in Tyne and Wear during the period January 1979 to December 1986.

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will give the total number of redundancies in the shipbuilding industry throughout the United Kingdom during the period from 1 January 1979 to 31 December 1986.

Mr. Atkins

It is estimated that there was a reduction in employment of some 48,000 in the shipbuilding industry in the United Kingdom during the period 1 January 1979 to 31 December 1986.
