Mr. Maxton

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the total cost to his Department of preparing and printing(a) the pamphlet "The New Community Charge —How Will it Work For You" and (b) the newspaper advertisements concerning the community charge.

The cost to my Department of preparing and printing the newspaper advertisements and pamphlet for the current community charge information campaign is:

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland in which newspapers and magazines he intends to publish his advertisements concerning the community charge, on how many occasions he intends to publish them; and what is the estimated cost of this advertising.

Mr. Rifkind

A public information advertising campaign is currently appearing in the following national, Scottish daily, Sunday and local weekly newspapers. A list of these is appended. Advertisements will appear in nine national, Scottish daily and Sunday newspapers on a total of 19 occasions, and in 119 local weekly newspapers on a total of 125 occasions. The total cost will be £105,600 plus VAT.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what maximum payment of community charge, including community water charge, would have been payable by pensioners on basic retirement pension income, in the current financial year, for each district, island and regional authority; and if he will express each sum payable as a percentage of the total community charge in that area.
