HC Deb 01 December 1987 vol 123 cc565-6W
Mr. Clay

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services at what level of gross income entitlement to housing benefit will cease, assuming that family credit is claimed and that average rent and rates are paid, after the Social Security Act 1986 is implemented in April 1988.

Mr. Portillo

[holding answer 13 November 1987]: On the basis of illustrative assumptions about the level of rents, rates and tax allowances next year, a married man with two children aged 9 and 12 will lose entitlement to housing benefit when his total gross income reaches £134.76.

Notes:

1. The example assumes child benefit of £14.50 and family credit of £29.26 is in payment.

2. The rent is assumed to be £19.12 per week and the rates £8.02.

3. The married man's tax allowance is assumed to be £3,925 per annum and the basic rate of tax is assumed to be unchanged at 27 per cent.
