HC Deb 30 April 1987 vol 115 c194W
Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what representations he has made to the European Economic Community following the recent ban by the Republic of Ireland on purchases of duty-free goods in Northern Ireland: and if he will make a statement;

(2) what representations he has made to the Government of the Republic of Ireland following its recent restriction on residents purchasing duty-free goods in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

The restriction of duty-free allowances announced by the Irish Finance Minister on 31 March appears to be inconsistent with EC legislation. On 2 April, the Government accordingly asked the Commission what action it planned to take. On 14 April, the Commission indicated that it intended to open infraction proceedings against the Irish Government.
