§ Mr. McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will state the percentage increase or decrease in road deaths in the eastern area based on Bedford for the latest period for which statistics are available; how this compares with the national figure; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe information is given on page 37 of "Road Accident Statistics English Regions 1985", a copy of which is in the Library. Eastern region deaths fell by 3 per cent. between 1980 and 1985, compared with a 13 per cent. fall in England as a whole. Part of the reason for this may be the higher than average traffic growth in eastern region. This is shown in "Statistics Bulletin (87)31", which is also in the Library.
