HL Deb 27 April 1987 vol 486 c1348WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the convention inhibiting members of the Royal Family from entering into public controversy is still in force, and if so whether they will define to it whom it applies.

The Minister of State, Home Office (The Earl of Caithness)

There are recognised constitutional conventions applying to the position of the sovereign in such matters. The position of other members of the Royal Family is not subject to formal conventions of this nature and is not a matter for Her Majesty's Government.
