Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland which authorities or bodies made representations to him prior to the award of his authorisation to Babcock-Thorn to dispose of radioactive waste at Rosyth dockyard.

Mr. Ancram

The following local authorities and public bodies responded to consultation:

  1. Fife Regional Council
  2. Fife Health Board
  3. Dunfermline District Council
  4. Forth River Purification Board
  5. Lothian Regional Council

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland which bodies were invited to make representations about the award of the nuclear site licence to Babcock-Thorn.

Mr. Lang

Her Majesty's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate sought the views of the Ministry of Defence, the Industry Department for Scotland, the Scottish Development Department and Babcock-Thorn.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland on what occasions since 1974 nuclear site licences have been awarded without any consultative process.

Mr. Lang

I am advised by Her Majesty's Nuclear Installations Inspectorate that during the period in question no licence has been awarded in respect of a new nuclear installation without consultation.
