HC Deb 09 April 1987 vol 114 c403W
Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many kidney transplants have taken place over the past five years; how many failed; how many lasted six months, six months to two years, two years to five years, five years to 10 years and longer than 10 years; and if he will give similar figures for heart and lung transplants and for liver transplants.

Mrs. Currie

According to the latest information provided by the United Kingdom Transplant Service (UKTS), the number of cadaveric kidney transplants performed in the United Kingdom within the National Health Service during the five years up to 31 December 1986, was 6,4491. The UKTS has been notified of the failure of 1,669 of these grafts.

The remaining information for which my hon. Friend asked is not available in exactly the form requested. A detailed analysis has been possible only on 6,191 patients. Of these, a total of 4,528 grafts were known to have survived for at least six months, and 2,631 to have survived for at least two years. These figures cannot be used to calculate accurate survival rates because they exclude grafts performed less than six months and less than two years respectively before the end of the period. Reliable data are not available to calculate graft survival over a five or 10-year period.

During the same five-year period 518 heart transplants, 99 heart/lung transplants, three lung transplants and 307 liver transplants were carried out. Information on graft survival for these transplants is not available centrally.

1 Following recent discussions with the UKTS about the source of data quoted in earlier answers and late notifications of transplants performed in recent years, some adjustments have been made to the annual total numbers. The years affected and the revised figures for the numbers of cadaveric transplants performed are:

Number
1982 1,033
1985 1,336
1986 11,493
1 Notified to date, additional notifications may necessitate further revision.

These have been included in the five-year total given.
